The Unfolding Tapestry: Weaving a Life of Love and Purpose

Sunday, 23 November 2025

A seventh-century warning about "positions of accusation" and a modern psychologist's decade of couples research turn out to be describing the exact same danger. Having established marriage as a sacred covenant, this session moves from foundation to practice: what does it actually take to sustain affection and mercy once the wedding is over? The session's first move is to strip away the Hollywood definition of love — the grand gestures, the "soulmate" feeling — and replace it with what is called the "cement" that holds a family together: a decision, renewed daily, to be kind, forgiving and present even when the feeling is low. Ayatullah Mutahhari's warning that passion "appears quickly" and "is extinguished quickly" is set against a love rooted in shared spiritual direction, which endures. That love, the session argues, can only grow where there is trust — and trust runs both ways. The Qur'an's warning against baseless suspicion is not a shield a spouse can hide behind while behaving secretively; Imam Ali, peace be upon him, commanded believers to "beware of the positions of accusation" themselves. The session draws a striking parallel here to Dr John Gottman's research on trust as one of the two load-bearing walls of a relationship, built or eroded in small daily choices. This leads to the evening's most careful piece of clarification: the Qur'an's image of spouses as libas, a garment that protects, adorns and conceals. That duty of concealment covers ordinary faults — but it never covers dhulm, oppression or harm. Drawing on the jurisprudential exceptions to backbiting, the session insists that seeking help to stop abuse is not a betrayal of a spouse; it is an obligation. Where does concealing a spouse's fault end, and covering up real harm begin? What the evening covers Love as an active verb. The image of love as the "cement" of marriage, against Ayatullah Mutahhari's warning that passion alone cannot bear the weight of a family. Trust as a two-way street. The Qur'an's caution against suspicion held together with Imam Ali's warning against "positions of accusation". Spouses as libas. The garment metaphor of protection, adornment and concealment, and its real limits. The line between fault and harm. The jurisprudential exceptions to backbiting, and why seeking help to stop abuse is honour, not betrayal. The divine pattern of roles. A reading of the spouses' respective roles that forbids servility rather than establishing it.

O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul and created from it its mate and dispersed from both of them many men and women. And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another, and the wombs. Indeed Allah is ever, over you, an Observer
