The First Stitch: Weaving Faith into Marriage

Saturday, 22 November 2025

Marry someone for their wealth or beauty, warns a Prophetic tradition, and God may simply take those very things away. This opening session sets out the reason the whole series exists: marriage in Islam is not a social arrangement or a means of personal fulfilment, but a mithaq ghalidh — a solemn, sacred covenant — with God as the unseen third party in the relationship, not an external observer of it. The Qur'an describes spouses created for one another "that you may find rest in them," with tranquility, affection and mercy placed between them as divine gifts, not fleeting emotions we happen to generate ourselves. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, tied this directly to faith itself: whoever marries has safeguarded half their religion, and must be mindful of God in the remaining half. From this foundation, the session turns to what actually determines whether a marriage flourishes: the criteria by which a partner is chosen. Deen, religious commitment, and akhlaq, character, are set above wealth, beauty, lineage and social standing — the very things culture trains us to prioritise. The Qur'an's declaration that nobility before God rests on God-consciousness alone is used to dismantle the practice, found in some communities, of restricting marriage to Sayyeds only — a custom the session shows has no grounding in the practice of the Imams themselves, who married outside their own lineage. The session closes with the model of simplicity in Sayyedah Fatimah al-Zahra, peace be upon her: her modest dowry and household provision stand as a rebuke to the competitive extravagance that burdens marriage today, and a reminder that honour lies in piety, not possessions. What actually earns a marriage God's blessing — the grandeur of the wedding, or the intention behind the choice? What the evening covers Marriage as sacred covenant. The Qur'anic vision of spouses given for tranquility, affection and mercy, and why this makes God the ever-present centre of the relationship. Choosing by deen and akhlaq. Why wealth and beauty are shown not to be the ingredients of a happy marriage. Dismantling lineage exclusivity. The Qur'anic proof that nobility is measured by piety alone, tested against the actual marriage practice of the Imams. The sunnah of simplicity. Sayyedah Fatimah's dowry as the standard against which modern extravagance is measured. Purifying the intention. The questions this session asks every listener to sit with before seeking marriage at all.
