The Benefits and Effects of Clarification

Saturday, 28 June 2025

A believing society can declare a decade "of justice and progress" and still end it no closer to either. Slogans do not build nations. This session argues that clarification only does its work when it stops being a private exchange and becomes structured public discourse — repeated and translated into policy, not simply proclaimed. Ideals like justice mean nothing as decoration; they must be studied and modelled, or a decade ends exactly where it began. Two qualities make this possible, according to the Commander of the Faithful, Imam Ali, peace be upon him: insight and steadfastness. "None shall bear this standard except he who possesses insight, patience, and knowledge of the places of truth," he taught — and the session builds an ethic of naseehah, sincere mutual advice, from the Qur'an's short chapter on time itself: everyone is in loss, except those who have faith, do good, and enjoin one another to truth and to patience. Break that chain, and isolation spreads, hope dissipates, and lofty goals quietly become impossible before anyone notices they were abandoned. The session closes on a warning as much as a promise: to know the truth and withhold it is its own form of betrayal. Culture is not a tool to be wielded for advantage — it is the tongue of a civilisation's soul. If everyone already knows the truth, why does a society still need to be told it, again and again? What the evening covers From speech to discourse. Why clarification must become a repeated, disciplined public conversation, not a single utterance. Insight and steadfastness. Imam Ali's description of what it actually takes to carry the truth. The chain of mutual counsel. Building naseehah, sincere advice, from the chapter on time. Silence as betrayal. Why withholding a known truth is treated as complicity, not caution.
