Fruit of the Heart
Four nights on raising our children — in the days of the martyrdom of Sayyedah Fatimah al-Zahra, peace and blessings be upon her.
The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, called his daughter the fruit of his heart. This series, the Fatimiyyah programme for 1448, takes its name from his words — and its subject from the question every parent carries: how do we raise a child who stays close to God, without spoiling her and without harming her? The tradition asks for love and for limits, at once.
It follows last year's Wilayah in the Home, on marriage, which ended, almost in passing, by naming the fruit of a marriage: tarbiyyah, the raising of righteous servants of God.
The four nights follow one girl and the man who raised her — Mary, vowed to God before she was born, grown a beautiful growth, and placed in Zechariah's care — and beside her story runs another: Sayyedah Fatimah and the father who raised her after her mother died.
-
Part one, Before the Heart Hardens, is the soil: what a child is when she arrives, what it means to raise one, and what the first seven years are for.
-
Part two, A Beautiful Growth, is the guardian: love and limits, and the one who asks before he judges.
-
Part three, The Storm, is the crowd: slander, screens, and the child who drifts.
-
Part four, The House of Praise, is grief: Karbala, and the children who go ahead of us.
For the new parent and the seasoned one, for the parent still waiting, and for every one of us who was once a child.
