Before the Heart Hardens: The Soil, the Seed and the Fitrah
A father coming home from a war sat down on the road to write to his son about the heart of the young — and why he would not wait.
A young heart, Amir al-Mu'minin, Imam Ali, peace and blessings be upon him, wrote to his son, is like empty land: it accepts whatever is cast into it — so he hastened, before the heart could harden. He wrote it on the road back from Siffin, with a state and a war on his shoulders. That is the night's title, in his words — and its question. Many of us were raised on rules without reasons. Some of us stayed out of fear; some of us left — not because the religion failed us, but because of how it was sown. The soil did not fail; the sowing did.
So the series begins before the beginning: with a mother and a child she has not yet seen. Before Mary is born, her mother vows the child in her womb to God. She was expecting a son, and a daughter came — and God accepted her, made her grow up in a worthy fashion, and placed her in Zechariah's care. The promise was kept, but not the way anyone foresaw: through the daughter. The child you are given is not the child you planned.
Accept her — then cultivate her.
And the night asks what that cultivating is. A child is not clay to be pressed, or a blank page to be written on before somebody else gets there first. She is living soil, with the seed already in it — born facing God. Upbringing is cultivation, not manufacture: the gardener, not the potter. And the first school is not a building. It is a mother's lap and a father's side, seven years of play, and the small words of faith sown into a childhood one at a time, and then left to grow.
The question underneath it
If a child arrives already facing God, what is our work?
To install something — or to protect and tend what is already there? And for the adult in the room who was pressed rather than tended: is what was in you buried, or gone?
What the evening covers
-
Empty land. A father's letter to his son, and why he hastened before the heart could harden.
-
A vow over the womb. Mary's mother, a daughter where a son was promised, and a promise kept through her — as God grew Sayyedah Fatimah under her father.
-
Born facing God. The fitrah: not clay, not a blank page, but living soil — and a word to the wounded adult: the fitrah is buried, not gone.
-
The gardener, not the potter. What tarbiyah means, why fear restrains but does not grow, and why spoiling is not too much love.
-
The first school. The mother's lap, seven years of play, the noisy child, and the small words of faith spaced over years.
It ends with the women at the cradle. When the women of Mecca would not come to Sayyedah Khadijah, four women came in to her, sent by God, for the birth of Sayyedah Fatimah — and among them was Mary. And the maqtal, The Door He Called At, is for Sayyedah Fatimah al-Zahra, peace and blessings be upon her, on the night of the twelfth of Jumada al-Ula: seventy-five days after her father.

O God, just as You have appointed our hearts as its carriers and made known to us through Your mercy its nobility and excellence, so also bless Muhammad, its preacher, and his Household, its guardians, and place us among those who confess that it has come from You, lest doubt about attesting to it assail us, or deviation from its straightforward path shake us!
