# The Ink of Silence

In the sun-drenched courtyard of old Damascus, Elias sat before a desk of polished cedar, the air thick with the scent of oak gall ink and drying parchment. The morning light caught the dust motes dancing above his workspace, illuminating two distinct paths laid out before him.

The first was a roll of shimmering silk, delivered by a wealthy merchant’s servant. It bore a commission to inscribe the merchant’s own verse, a declaration of power and wealth, to be hung in his grand hall. The payment was substantial, enough to secure Elias’s name in the city’s ledgers for years to come.

The second was a battered leather satchel, placed gently at his door by an elderly scholar. Inside lay water-damaged letters from a teacher long passed, their ink fading into ghosts of thought. The scholar asked for a year of patient copying, so that students two centuries hence might still grasp the wisdom within.

Elias looked at his own poem, half-drafted on the desk, a testament to his skill. He looked at the satchel. The choice was not merely financial; it was spiritual. To choose the silk was to amplify ego. To choose the satchel was to serve the truth, anonymously.

He thought of the Prophet’s (PBUH & His Family) teaching: 'Say, “I do not ask you any reward for it, and I am no impostor.”' (Quran 38:86). True service seeks no spotlight. It is the quiet work of the heart, hidden from the eyes of men but seen by God.

The question hung between them like incense smoke. Elias reached for the satchel. His fingers brushed the worn leather, feeling the weight of centuries. He picked up his reed pen, dipped it in the ink, and began to copy the fading words, erasing his own name from the page to preserve the teacher’s voice.

## Scripture

> اللَّهُمَّ وَقَدْ أَشْرَفَ عَلَى خَفَايَا الْأَعْمَالِ عِلْمُكَ، وَانْكَشَفَ كُلُّ مَسْتُورٍ دُونَ خُبْرِكَ، وَلَا تَنْطَوِي عَنْكَ دَقَائِقُ الْلأُمُورِ، وَلَا تَعْزُبُ عَنْكَ غَيِّبَاتُ السَّرَائِرِ
>
> O God, Your knowledge watches over hidden works, every covered thing is exposed before Your awareness, the intricacies of things are not concealed from You, and unseen mysteries slip not away from You.
