# The Flame of Najaf

London wept in silence. The news had travelled across the seas, carrying the weight of a mountain: the martyrdom of the Great Leader and Scholar of Iran. For Thomas, a British-born scholar of philosophy who had embraced Islam with a fervour inherited from his late grandmother, the grief was not distant; it was visceral.

In the quiet of their modest home in Islington, Thomas sat beside his wife, Sarah. The television was off, but the image of the funeral processions in Qom burned in his mind. He felt a profound emptiness, as if the sun had set prematurely on the world of truth.

Sarah, her emerald-green hijab draped softly over her shoulders, placed a warm cup of tea on the table. She watched him, her eyes gentle but perceptive. She saw the storm raging behind his gaze—the fear that without that guiding light, the path ahead would plunge into darkness.

Thomas stared at his hands, the hands that had turned the pages of Mutahhari’s works, that had argued for justice in his workplace, that had raised his children in faith. Now they felt useless. The cause seemed too vast, the loss too great to bear.

But as the days passed, the grief began to transmute. It did not vanish; it deepened, settling into his bones. He recalled the teachings of the Imam (AS), who said that the martyr is not dead, but alive. Was the Leader truly gone?

One evening, Thomas opened a book on ethics, his finger tracing the lines of wisdom. He looked up, his expression shifting from sorrow to resolve. The candle on the table flickered, casting long shadows. He stood up, not in despair, but in purpose.

He turned to Sarah, his voice steady. 'We do not mourn because the journey ends,' he said. 'We mourn because we must now walk it ourselves.'

Sarah smiled, a tear tracing a path down her cheek. She understood. The flag of truth remained aloft. The work continued. Thomas would build himself, train his heart, and light the world, just as the Leader had done.

'And We said: Do not fear, you are the superior ones.' (Quran 20:68)

## Scripture

> نَسْأَلُ اللّهَ سُبْحانَهُ مَنازِلَ الشُّهَداءِ، ومُعايَشَةَ السُّعَداءِ، ومُرافَقَةَ الأنْبِياءِ والأبْرارِ.
>
> We ask Allah, the Glorified, for [our inclusion in] the ranks of the martyrs, the fellowship of the felicitous and the company of the Prophets and the virtuous ones.
