# Spring After the Longest Winter

Arman couldn't sleep. He sat on the rooftop of his family's home in Tehran, a blanket around his shoulders, watching the city's lights flicker like tired stars. Ramadan was ending, and somewhere beyond the haze, the crescent moon of Shawwal was hours from being born. But joy felt impossible. His uncle — his brave, laughing uncle — was among the martyrs this month had claimed.

Thousands of miles away in London, Daniyal couldn't sleep either. He'd just come home from another protest march, his voice gone, a crumpled placard still in his hands. His WhatsApp was full of messages from cousins in Iran he prayed were still alive. He felt guilty for being safe. Angry at a world that watched in silence. Helpless despite all his shouting.

That night, without knowing the other existed, both young men opened the Quran. And both found the same verse:

'Do not think of those killed in the way of God as dead. They are alive with their Lord, well provided for.' (Quran 3:169)

In Tehran, Arman's grandmother sat beside him. She had seen wars before, buried people she loved before. She told him that grief and gratitude are not enemies — that the martyrs would want him to smile on Eid, not for himself, but as an act of defiance. Because joy in the face of oppression is itself a form of resistance.

In London, Daniyal's father called him and said almost the same words.

On Eid morning, Arman put on his best clothes and walked to the prayer.

## Scripture

> مِّنَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ رِجَالٞ صَدَقُواْ مَا عَٰهَدُواْ ٱللَّهَ عَلَيۡهِۖ فَمِنۡهُم مَّن قَضَىٰ نَحۡبَهُۥ وَمِنۡهُم مَّن يَنتَظِرُۖ وَمَا بَدَّلُواْ تَبۡدِيلٗا
>
> Among the believers are men true to what they promised Allah. Among them is he who has fulfilled his vow [to the death], and among them is he who awaits [his chance]. And they did not alter [the terms of their commitment] by any alteration

— *Quran, Surah Al-Ahzab (The Combined Forces), Chapter 33, Verse 23*
