Undistracted Prayer and the Warfare Against Thoughts
The spiritual journey of prayer is often hindered by the relentless warfare against intrusive thoughts, a struggle that demands unwavering focus and divine assistance. Many believers find themselves distracted by worldly worries, which can obscure the sanctity of worship and diminish its spiritual reward.
This internal conflict is not merely a personal failing but a recognised challenge in the path of devotion, requiring conscious effort to maintain presence of heart during prayer.
Imam Zayn al-Abidin (AS) beautifully articulates this vulnerability in the Sahifa Sajjadiyyah, supplicating: 'Distract me not through worry from observing Your obligations and acting in accordance with Your prescriptions.' This profound plea highlights the necessity of seeking Allah’s protection against the anxieties that pull us away from our religious duties.
By acknowledging our weakness and turning to the Divine for aid, we transform our struggle into an act of worship in itself.

أَسْأَلُكَ بِسُبُحَاتِ وَجْهِكَ وَ بِأَنْوَارِ قُدْسِكَ وَ أَبْتَهِلُ إِلَيْكَ بِعَوَاطِفِ رَحْمَتِكَ وَ لَطَائِفِ بِرِّكَ أَنْ تُحَقِّقَ ظَنِّي بِمَا أُؤَمِّلُهُ مِنْ جَزِيلِ إِكْرَامِكَ وَ جَمِيلِ إِنْعَامِكَ فِي الْقُرْبَى مِنْكَ وَ الزُّلْفَى لَدَيْكَ وَ التَّمَتُّعِ بِالنَّظَرِ إِلَيْكَ وَ هَا أَنَا مُتَعَرِّضٌ لِنَفَحَاتِ رَوْحِكَ وَ عَطْفِكَ وَ مُنْتَجِعٌ غَيْثَ جُودِكَ وَ لُطْفِكَ فَارٌّ مِنْ سَخَطِكَ إِلَى رِضَاكَ هَارِبٌ مِنْكَ إِلَيْكَ رَاجٍ أَحْسَنَ مَا لَدَيْكَ مُعَوِّلٌ عَلَى مَوَاهِبِكَ مُفْتَقِرٌ إِلَى رِعَايَتِكَ إِلَهِي مَا بَدَأْتَ بِهِ مِنْ فَضْلِكَ فَتَمِّمْهُ وَ مَا وَهَبْتَ لِي مِنْ كَرَمِكَ فَلا تَسْلُبْهُ وَ مَا سَتَرْتَهُ عَلَيَّ بِحِلْمِكَ فَلا تَهْتِكْهُ وَ مَا عَلِمْتَهُ مِنْ قَبِيحِ فِعْلِي فَاغْفِرْهُ إِلَهِي اسْتَشْفَعْتُ بِكَ إِلَيْكَ ،
I ask You by the radiance of Your splendor and by the lights of Your holiness, and I beseech You by the tender affections of Your mercy and the subtleties of Your benevolence, that You fulfill my expectation in what I hope from You—from the greatness of Your honor and the beauty of Your blessings—in drawing near to You, in approaching Your threshold, and in the joy of gazing toward You. At this very moment, I expose myself to the gentle breezes of Your mercy and Your attention, and I seek the rain of Your boundless generosity and grace. I flee from Your wrath toward Your good pleasure, and I escape from You unto You. I hope for the finest of what is with You, I rely upon Your gifts, and I am in need of Your care. O Allah, bring to completion what You initiated upon me from Your grace, and do not take away what You have bestowed upon me from Your generosity, and do not expose what You have concealed of me through Your forbearance, and forgive what You know of the ugliness of my deeds. O Allah, I seek intercession with You through You.
