# Truth in Jest: The Balance of Manners and Integrity

In our interactions, we must carefully distinguish between permissible jest and forbidden falsehood. Imam al-Ṣādiq (AS) taught that while the Messenger of God (PBUH & His Family) used to joke to bring joy, he never spoke other than the truth. This highlights a critical nuance: light-heartedness is a part of good manners, yet it must never cross the line into deception or derision of faith.

We are cautioned that frivolous discourse can erode our spiritual integrity. As Amīr al-mu’minīn (AS) noted, whenever a man cuts a joke, he separates away a bit from his wit. Thus, our speech should remain untainted by lies, even in play, recognising that truth ultimately prevails over falsehood.

## Scripture

> وَقَالَ (عليه ‏السلام): لَا خَيْرَ فِي الصَّمْتِ عَنِ الْحُكْمِ، كَمَا أنَّهُ لَا خَيْرَ فِي الْقَوْلِ بِالْجَهْلِ.
>
> Amīr al-mu’minīn, peace be upon him, said: There is no good in silence over matters involving wisdom just as there is no good in speaking with ignorance.

— *Nahjul Balagha, Saying 471, Section 1*
