The Inevitability of Death and Divine Decree

The Prophet (PBUH & His Family) once asked, “Will all the people die and the angels survive?” This prompted the revelation that every soul shall taste death, affirming that mortality is a universal decree encompassing all creation.

As stated in Al-Mizan, this reality underscores that human existence is limited between the clay of origin and the decreed terms that accompany death, serving as a fundamental stage in God’s cosmic plan.

Death is not merely an end but a transition, described as the “drunkenness” of the soul being wrenched away from worldly attachments. It is a sure event that complements the Divine Decree, where we are tested by good and ill by way of probation.

As the Quran reminds us, “Every soul shall taste death, and We will test you with good and ill by way of test, and to Us you will be brought back.

Recognising this inevitability allows us to view death as a true passage to the next abode, just as the Resurrection is true.

O God, bless Muhammad and the Household of Muhammad, take my soul while it is firm in sincerity, cut off my need for this world, make my desire for what is with You become a yearning to meet You, and give me true confidence in You!
