The Greater Jihad: Conquering the Battlefield Within

The Holy Prophet (PBUH & His Family) welcomed returning warriors with a profound reminder: though they had fulfilled the minor jihad on the battlefield, the greater jihad still awaited them — the jihad of the self. As Imam al-Sadiq (AS) transmitted this teaching, he preserved for us a truth that illuminates the very nature of human existence.

We are marvellous beings possessing two lives within one existence: an outward life connected to this material world through our bodies, and an inner life connected to the celestial realms through our souls. The struggle against external enemies, however demanding, pales before the struggle to purify and govern our inner world.

This inward realm consists of several levels and grades, each requiring its own discipline and vigilance. Every soul carries within it a battlefield far more consequential than any earthly front.
