# The Gnostic Art of Invocation: Training the Heart

The perfect gnostic, Shaykh Shahabadi, may my soul be a ransom for him, offers profound guidance on the spiritual discipline of invocation. He instructs that during supplication, one should approach the heart as a teacher instructs a child to speak. Just as a teacher patiently guides a child until they can articulate words independently, the believer must use verbal invocation to train the heart in the art of sincere connection with the Divine.

In this process, the exoteric act of speaking aids the esoteric state of the heart. As one persists in this instruction, the 'tongue' of the childlike heart opens, allowing the inner spiritual reality to support the outward form. This mutual assistance mirrors the teacher’s journey: initially, the teacher helps the child, but eventually, the child’s success brings joy to the teacher, removing their weariness. Thus, the outward practice nurtures the inward transformation.

## Scripture

>
> Amīr al-mu’minīn, peace be upon him, said: Whoever set right his inward self, Allāh sets right his outward self. Whoever performs acts for his religion, Allāh accomplishes his acts of this world. Whoever’s dealings between himself and Allāh are good, Allāh turns the dealings between him and other people good.
