# The Discipline of Prayer Beyond Spiritual Whims

Some individuals harbour the mistaken belief that they should only engage in prayer when their hearts are spontaneously drawn by a sudden spirit of grace or an overwhelming urge for supplication. They treat worship as a matter of emotional convenience, waiting for a divine invitation that feels like a natural, irresistible pull before they perform this holy exercise. This approach reduces the sacred obligation of Salah to a fleeting feeling rather than a steadfast duty.

However, true devotion requires discipline and consistency, regardless of one’s emotional state. The Quran praises those who are humble in their prayers, implying a constant state of reverence rather than sporadic bursts of enthusiasm (Quran 23:2). We must not wait for inspiration to strike; instead, we should cultivate a habit of worship that persists through both ease and hardship.

## Scripture

>
> O Allah, forgive me every sin I have committed and every error with which I have stained myself. O Allah, through Your remembrance I seek nearness to You, and from Your displeasure I seek intercession at Your own threshold, and I ask You by Your generosity to draw me near to Your court of proximity, and to grant me Your gratitude, and to inspire me with Your remembrance. O Allah, I beseech You with the entreaty of a humble, lowly, and broken servant—that You deal gently with me, and have mercy upon me, and make me content and satisfied with what You have provided me, and keep me in a state of humility in all circumstances.
