# Outward Religion and the Danger of Hypocrisy

There is a profound contrast between those who hide their hypocrisy behind a mask of charming words and those who have sold their souls to God. As Al-Mizan explains, the former bring only ruin and destruction, while the latter, seeking nothing but the pleasure of Allah, revive truth and ensure that religious and worldly affairs acquire their correct shape.

We must be vigilant against this spiritual disease. Imam Ali (AS) warned in Nahj al-Balagha that even the smallest hypocrisy is akin to believing in more than one God, and that keeping company with those who follow their desires is the seat of Satan. Hypocrisy corrupts faith, acting as a twin to disbelief.

Therefore, we must ensure our hearts match our outward state, avoiding the self-righteousness that misguides others. By guarding against falsehood and jealousy, we preserve the dignity of our faith and align ourselves with the sincere believers who serve as a mercy to humanity.

## Scripture

> وَاللهِ مَا مُعَاوِيَةُ بِأَدْهَى مِنِّي، وَلكِنَّهُ يَغْدِرُ وَيَفْجُرُ، وَلَوْلاَ كَرَاهِيَةُ الْغَدْرِ لَكُنْتُ مِنْ أَدْهَى النَّاسِ، وَلَكِنْ كُلُّ غَدْرَة فَجْرَةٌ، وَكُلُّ فَجْرَة كَفْرَةٌ، وَلِكُلِّ غَادِر لِوَاءٌ يُعْرَفُ بِهِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ. وَاللهِ مَا أَسْتَغْفَلُ بالْمَكِيدَةِ، وَلاَ أُسْتَغْمَزُ بالشَّدِيدَةِ.

> By Allāh, Mu‘āwiyah is not more cunning than I am, but he deceives and commits evil deeds. Had it not been for the reprehensibility of deceit, I would have been the most cunning of all men. But (the fact is that) every deceit is a sin and every sin is disobedience (of Allāh), and every deceitful person will have a banner by which he will be recognised on the Day of Judgement. By Allāh, I cannot be made forgetful by strategy, nor can I be overpowered by hardships.
