Push Notifications Guide

Stay connected with prayer times, community events and Islamic calendar reminders.

Overview

Truth Promoters offers push notifications to help you stay connected with your spiritual practice. Notifications are delivered using Web Push, which means they work even when your browser is closed.

All notifications are opt-in and can be customised to your preferences. We only send notifications you have explicitly asked for.

Types of notification

Prayer time reminders

Notifications for the daily prayers, based on your location and preferred calculation method:

Imsaak — pre-Fajr reminder for fasting
Fajr — dawn prayer
Dhuhr — midday prayer
Asr — afternoon prayer
Maghrib — sunset prayer
Isha — night prayer

When: notifications are sent at the exact prayer time calculated for your location. You can optionally set a reminder offset — five minutes before, for example — in your settings.

Community event reminders

Notifications about upcoming community events such as lectures, gatherings and special programmes. You choose how far in advance you are reminded.

When: based on your reminder preference — 1, 6, 24 or 48 hours before the event. If an event starts at 8:00 pm and you set a 24-hour reminder, you are notified at 8:00 pm the day before, adjusted to your local timezone.

Islamic calendar reminders

Daily reminders for significant Islamic dates, such as the birth and martyrdom anniversaries of the Ahlul Bayt (peace be upon them), Eid celebrations and other important occasions.

When: at your preferred time each day, 9:00 am by default. You can change this to any time that suits you. The time is in your local timezone, so 9:00 am set in London arrives at 9:00 am London time.

How to enable notifications

Open the notification settings using the bell icon on the homepage, or from Settings.
Allow browser permission when prompted. Your browser will ask whether to allow notifications from Truth Promoters.
Share your location, which is required for accurate prayer times. We use your coordinates for the calculation and store only your city and country for display.
Customise your preferences — which prayers to be notified about, your calculation method, any reminder offset, whether to receive community and calendar notifications, and your preferred sound.

Sound options

You can choose what plays when a notification arrives.

How sound works

Because of browser security policies, a website cannot play audio on its own without user interaction. This is a standard protection against unwanted noise from web pages.

Click to play the adhaan. When you click a prayer notification, the adhaan plays — clicking counts as user interaction. With Beep or Silent selected, no audio plays when you click.

Note

This is why the adhaan plays when you click the notification rather than when it first appears. We understand that is not ideal for a prayer reminder, but it is a browser limitation we cannot work around.

Tip: if you keep a Truth Promoters tab open, the adhaan may be able to play automatically when the notification arrives. This is not guaranteed on all browsers.

Why we need your location

Prayer times are calculated from the position of the sun relative to your geographic location. Different locations have different prayer times, even within one timezone.

What we store:

Your latitude and longitude, for accurate prayer time calculation.
City and country name, for display only.
Your timezone, so notifications are scheduled at the correct local time.

We do not track your location over time, and we do not share it with third parties. It is used only to calculate prayer times for your area.

How to disable notifications

You can turn notifications off at any time, by either route.

In our settings: click the bell icon on the homepage, then switch off the notifications you no longer want — or choose Unsubscribe to disable all of them.

In your browser settings: open your browser settings, go to Privacy & Security, find Site Permissions or Notifications, and block notifications from truthpromoters.com.

Troubleshooting

Start with the general checklist:

Check that browser notifications are allowed in your browser settings.
Make sure your device is not in Do Not Disturb or Focus mode.
Verify notifications are enabled in our settings.
Use the Test Push button to confirm your subscription is working.

Windows 10 and 11

Open Settings → System → Notifications.
Ensure Notifications is turned On.
Scroll down and find your browser (Chrome, Firefox, Edge).
Open it and ensure notifications are On.
Check that Focus Assist is not blocking notifications.

macOS

Open System Settings (System Preferences on older versions).
Click Notifications.
Find your browser in the list (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Arc, and so on).
Enable Allow Notifications.
Set the alert style to Alerts or Banners.
Check that Focus mode is not active — the moon icon in the menu bar.

Ubuntu, Linux Mint and Debian

Open Settings → Notifications.
Ensure Do Not Disturb is Off.
Check that your browser appears in the app list and is enabled.
On GNOME, run gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.notifications show-banners true.
Ensure a notification daemon is running — dunst, mako, or GNOME's built-in one.

Fedora

Open Settings → Notifications.
Toggle Do Not Disturb off.
Ensure your browser is listed and enabled.
On Wayland, ensure xdg-desktop-portal is installed.
Run sudo dnf install xdg-desktop-portal-gnome.

Arch Linux and Manjaro

Install a notification daemon if you do not have one: sudo pacman -S dunst (or libnotify).
Start the daemon with dunst &.
Add it to your window manager or desktop environment startup configuration.
On KDE, check System Settings → Notifications.
Test with notify-send "Test" "Hello".

Gentoo

Ensure D-Bus is running: rc-service dbus start.
Install a notification daemon: emerge --ask x11-misc/dunst.
On GNOME and KDE, notification support is built in.
Ensure your browser's USE flags include notification.
Test with notify-send "Test" "Hello".

iOS (iPhone and iPad)

Web Push on iOS needs a little more setup than elsewhere.

Requires iOS 16.4 or later.
Open the website in Safari.
Tap Share → Add to Home Screen.
Open the app from your Home Screen, not from Safari.
Enable notifications when prompted.
Check Settings → Notifications and find the app.

Android

Open Settings → Apps and find your browser.
Tap Notifications and ensure they are enabled.
Check that truthpromoters.com is allowed in your browser settings.
Disable Battery Saver for your browser, which can otherwise delay notifications.
Some manufacturers, Samsung and Xiaomi among them, use aggressive battery optimisation — add your browser to the exceptions.

Wrong prayer times?

Verify your location is set correctly on the homepage.
Check the calculation method matches your preference (Jafari, ISNA, and so on).
Ensure your device timezone is correct.

Privacy and your data

No tracking. We do not track your activity or share your data with advertisers.
Encrypted in transit. Notifications are encrypted from our server to your device.
Open standards. We use the W3C Web Push standard, with no proprietary third-party services.
Your control. You can unsubscribe at any time, and your notification data is deleted when you do.
