Imamah, Part 19 · Imam al-Jawad, Part 1 of 2 An eight-year-old was declared the Proof of God over the entire Muslim world — and the empire's chief judge tried to humiliate him with a single legal question. When Imam Ali al-Rida, peace be upon him, was martyred by poison in 203 AH, the community faced a crisis of certainty: his successor, Muhammad ibn Ali al-Jawad, was a boy of eight. Some wavered, unable to square divine authority with a child's age. His father had pre-empted the doubt, pointing to his young son before witnesses and naming him Proof of God after him — a designation the community was now asked to trust over the evidence of their own eyes. The ruling power tried two strategies at once: marriage into the royal household, to draw the young Imam into its orbit, and a public trial of intellect. The empire's chief judge, before a court gathered to watch a child falter, posed what looked like a simple question about a pilgrim who kills a game animal. The Imam answered by fracturing it into ten further questions the judge had never thought to ask — sanctuary or not, deliberate or accidental, first offence or habit, night or day — until the empire's senior jurist stood speechless.
