Youth at the Edge of Tomorrow

The enemies of this tradition are not afraid of its elders. They are afraid of its teenagers. This session argues that the fate of a community is rarely decided by its most senior institutions — it is decided by what has already been engraved into its youngest hearts. Imam Ali, peace be upon him, put the stakes plainly: "the heart of the youth is like uncultivated land — whatever is sown in it, it accepts." Whatever a community fails to plant there, something else will. The Qur'an, the session shows, does not treat youth as a lesser station. It is young people — not seasoned scholars — who take refuge in a cave and are "increased in guidance". It is a youth who confronts the idols of his people alone. It is a young man's steadfastness under pressure that the Qur'an holds up as the model of moral clarity: "prison is dearer to me than what they call me to." Against this inheritance, the session sets out a deliberate strategy aimed specifically at the young — a "soft war" that works not through force but through doubt, using three tactics: inducing miscalculation, cultivating despair, and spreading pessimism toward one's own community and leadership. The remedy offered is not more lecturing but earlier formation: "hasten to teach your youth… before" false ideologies reach them first, paired with the elder's duty, from the Treatise on Rights, to correct the young with mercy rather than exposure. If the youth are the actual target, why are they so rarely treated as the actual audience? What the evening covers Youth as Qur'anic exemplars, not exceptions.
