What Could Not Be Burned — The Answer Is a Piece of Paper
Premieres Wednesday, 26 August 2026

Opens 15 minutes before the session begins.
Mahdawiyyah, Part 26 · The Architecture of Guidance, Part 11· The House Beside the Grave, Part 2 They burned everything, and they destroyed nothing. Not one page of his major work is lost — and a thousand years later you can buy two of them in this country this afternoon. Last week ended with a house sacked, a teaching chair on fire in the street, forty years of notebooks gone, and an old scholar in hiding, in fear for his life, in a city that had decided it did not want him. By every visible measure they won. They did not. And the reason is not a miracle, and it is not luck, and it is not that somebody hid a box in a cellar. The reason is a piece of paper. Long before the fire, his books had already been read aloud, cover to cover, in front of named men who were then handed written permission to carry them onward and teach them to others. Those men were in Aleppo, in Tripoli, at Rayy, at Qom, at Kashan. Every one of them was already out of the city on the night it burned. You cannot raid a licence. There is no house to break into. The question underneath it How does a body of knowledge survive the destruction of every building it was ever kept in? What the evening covers He left, and he sat down again. What is actually documented about the journey south — and what is not. We are careful here, because a great deal of what is repeated about it cannot be shown. The answer is a piece of paper. What a licence to transmit actually is, how one was granted, what was written on the flyleaf, and why it is the most quietly radical document in this tradition. Two exhibits, and the second one is signed. One of them is dated, in a named town, in a named month — and it is written on a copy of a book that had been in the fire. It was instructed, not accidental. Write, and scatter your knowledge among your brethren. The system that saved this corpus was commanded into existence three centuries before anybody needed it. What he actually built — and what he did not. Fifteen scholars in a desert town. It took eight hundred years to become the thing we now take for granted, and nobody involved lived to see it. The verse across the two weeks Session 70 sits inside the first half of a single verse — they desire to extinguish the light of God with their mouths. This session reads the rest of it: وَاللَّهُ مُتِمُّ نُورِهِ — and God is the completer of His light. Not God will relight it, and not God will protect it. The One who brings it to its full term. Which means the light was already on its way somewhere when they arrived with the fire.

O Allah, convey to our Master, the Imam, the rightly-guided guide, the one who rises by Your command—may the blessings of Allah be upon him and upon his pure forefathers—on behalf of all believing men and women, in the easts of the earth and its wests, its plains and its mountains, its lands and its seas, and on behalf of me and my father and my mother, blessings weighing as much as the Throne of Allah, and the extent of His words, and all that His knowledge has enumerated, and all that His Book has encompassed. O Allah, on the morning of this day and for as long as I live of my days, I renew for him the covenant, the pledge, and the allegiance upon my neck, from which I shall never turn away, and which I shall never abandon. O Allah, place me among his companions, his helpers, his defenders, those who hasten toward him, those who fulfill his wishes, those who obey his commands, those who shield his person, those who rush to fulfill his will, and those who are slain in his presence. O Allah, if death—which You have decreed as certain upon Your servants—should come between me and him,
