The Wali: The Central Authority

Wilayah, Part 4 The verse that names Islam's central authority was revealed over a ring, given away mid-prayer. While in the bowing position of prayer, Imam Ali, peace be upon him, extended his hand to a beggar who had gone unanswered elsewhere in the mosque and gave him his ring. The Qur'an's response, this session argues, was Surah al-Maidah verse 55 — "your wali is only God, His Messenger, and the faithful who maintain the prayer and give the zakat while bowing down" — a verse the session traces not only through Shia sources but through Sunni ones too. Read this way, the verse does two things at once: it names a specific successor to lead after the Prophet, and it states, in the same breath, exactly why — genuine faith, prayer that turns a society toward God, and a generosity too urgent to wait for the prayer to end. The session widens from there to the question of what happens when leadership is not decided this way. One image stands in for the rest: at a single wedding, gold cases the size of a finger, each containing the deed to an estate, were flung by the sackful over the heads of the guests, with no record kept of who caught one or what they would do with the land inside. In the mountains at the same time, a family descended from Imam Hasan shared a single cloak between them, each taking a turn to cover himself for prayer.
