# The Trust and the Pulpit

A platform can be corrupt long before anyone climbs onto it — and the warning signs were named centuries ago.

The minbar, the pulpit, is not, this session argues, primarily a piece of furniture. Classical scholars read it as any "station of teaching and guidance" — a teaching circle, a broadcast, a page, wherever moral authority is exercised. To ascend it, in any of these forms, is to inherit a trust passed down from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, through Imam Ali and Sayyedah Zaynab, peace be upon them.

The session sets out three specific conditions under which that trust curdles into what the tradition calls a condemned pulpit. The first is intention: knowledge sought for status, income, or applause rather than for God. The second is manipulation: religious authority used to sow confusion or bend a congregation toward factional ends. The third is unearned elevation: someone assuming the role of guide — eloquent, credentialed, popular — without the sincerity or humility the role demands. Imam Ali's warning is blunt: a time comes when "the pulpit is ascended by one who does not deserve it."

Against this, the session sets out what a rightful pulpit actually owes its audience: speech pitched to what people can bear, drawn from the Prophetic pattern of speaking "with the language of his people," and a genuine welcome for questions. A speaker who mocks a sincere questioner, or allows others to, has already betrayed the trust — whatever else they get right.

What the evening covers

The true meaning of minbar. Why the tradition reads "pulpit" as any locus of teaching authority, not a wooden platform in a mosque.
The three marks of a condemned pulpit. Self-interested intention, manipulation of the audience, and unearned spiritual authority.
The Prophetic warning about future scholars. A time when mosques are full but "devoid of guidance".
The duty to welcome questions. Why refusing to clarify, or mocking those who ask, is itself a form of betrayal.

> اللَّهُمَّ صَلِّ عَلَى مُحَمَّدٍ وَآلِهِ، وَلَا تَرْفَعْنِي فِي النَّاسِ دَرَجَةً إِلَّا حَطَطْتَنِي عِنْدَ نَفْسِي مِثْلَهَا، وَلَا تُحْدِثْ لِي عِزّاً ظَاهِراً إِلَّا أَحْدَثْتَ لِي ذِلَّةً بَاطِنَةً عِنْدَ نَفْسِي بِقَدَرِهَا .
