They fasted. They recited the Qur'an. And they stayed silent exactly when it mattered. Speaking the truth is not the same as speaking the truth that is needed. This session asks a sharper question: of everything that could be said from a pulpit, what actually needs saying now? The Qur'an offers a warning in the shape of a tree — "a good word is like a good tree, its roots are firm, and its branches reach to the sky." The enemy does not waste effort pruning leaves. It goes for the root. Explaining minor rulings while the framework of divine authority is dismissed elsewhere is not caution — it is cosmetic scholarship in a time of real crisis. The session names the deeper reason this happens: not usually ignorance, but calculation — fear of losing standing, an audience, or comfort, a silence it calls deliberate rather than innocent. It draws a line back to Karbala itself, quoting Ziyarat Ashura's distancing of "a nation who heard of these events and were content with them" — people who knew, and spoke of something safer instead. Speech at the wrong time, Imam Ali warned, is mere babble; the same truth, delivered to the wrong crisis, misses the moment it was needed for. When someone already knows what needs to be said and still doesn't say it — what do we actually call that? What the evening covers The parable of the tree. Why clarification must go for the root of a distortion, not its branches. Misplaced priorities. The danger of eloquent, accurate speech that answers a crisis nobody is having. Calculated silence. Fear of standing, controversy, or loss, named as the real reason truths go unspoken. Ziyarat Ashura's witness. What it means to hear of an injustice and be content with silence. ## Scripture > السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا أَبَا عَبْدِ اللَّهِ السَّلامُ عَلَيْكَ يَا ابْنَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّكَ قَدْ أَقَمْتَ الصَّلاةَ وَ آتَيْتَ الزَّكَاةَ وَ أَمَرْتَ بِالْمَعْرُوفِ وَ نَهَيْتَ عَنِ الْمُنْكَرِ وَ دَعَوْتَ إِلَى سَبِيلِ رَبِّكَ بِالْحِكْمَةِ وَ الْمَوْعِظَةِ الْحَسَنَةِ وَ أَشْهَدُ أَنَّ الَّذِينَ سَفَكُوا دَمَكَ وَ اسْتَحَلُّوا حُرْمَتَكَ مَلْعُونُونَ مُعَذَّبُونَ عَلَى لِسَانِ دَاوُدَ وَ عِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ ذَلِكَ بِمَا عَصَوْا وَ كَانُوا يَعْتَدُونَ > > Peace be upon you, O Aba Abdillah. Peace be upon you, O son of the Messenger of Allah. I bear witness that you established the prayer, paid the alms-tax (zakat), enjoined what is good, forbade what is evil, and called unto the way of your Lord with wisdom and fair exhortation.
