Opens 15 minutes before the session begins.

Mahdawiyyah, Part 12 · The Shield, Part 2 Before the Qur'an is even cited, the case for strategic prudence is made by a chameleon. Allamah Tabatabai's commentary on the exception clause examined last week does not open with scripture. It opens with nature: the chameleon that changes colour rather than fight a predator, the octopus that vanishes into ink and shifting skin rather than face a shark, the deer that freezes rather than charge a wolf. None of these creatures are lying, he argues — they are protecting a true fact, their own survival, from something that would destroy it. The God who designed the chameleon is the same God who wrote the exception into scripture, so the two are one instruction stated twice: once in creation, once in revelation. The evening also takes on the oldest counter-accusation directly — that strategic prudence is simply hypocrisy under another name. The Qur'an's own portrait of the hypocrite is someone who carries disbelief inside while wearing faith outwardly, entering the community in order to damage it from within. The believer who conceals under threat carries the opposite cargo: faith inside, caution on the tongue, concealment aimed at preservation rather than sabotage. The two acts can look identical from outside. Their direction, purpose and destination are opposites. Concealment can serve two entirely opposite purposes — so what decides which one a given act actually is? What the evening covers The testimony of creation. Allamah Tabatabai's argument that strategic prudence is written into nature itself, before it is ever legislated. Two mirror opposites. Why hypocrisy and strategic prudence move in contrary directions, by the Qur'an's own criteria. The pearl and the shell. Ayatollah Jawadi Amoli's image for why concealment is never mistaken for the thing it protects. Heroic flexibility. How the same principle scales from an individual under threat to a nation at the negotiating table.

O Allah! The affliction has grown immense, the hidden hardships have become manifest, the veil has been lifted, and the earth has become constricted despite all that the heavens encompass. O Lord! To You alone we bring our grievances, and in hardship and ease we rely upon none but You. O Allah! Send blessings upon Muhammad and the Family of Muhammad, those whom You commanded us to obey. O Allah! Hasten their relief through the advent of their Qa'im (the Awaited One), and make his glory manifest. O Muhammad! O Ali! O Ali! O Muhammad! Suffice me, for you are my sufficiency. O Muhammad! O Ali! O Ali! O Muhammad! Aid me, for you are my helpers. O Muhammad! O Ali! O Ali! O Muhammad! Protect me, for you are my protectors. O my Master! O Sahib al-Zaman (Master of the Age)! O my Master! O Sahib al-Zaman! O my Master! O Sahib al-Zaman! I seek your aid! I seek your aid! I seek your aid! Come to my rescue! Come to my rescue! Grant me refuge! Refuge! Refuge!
