Mashhad means "the place of martyrdom", yet it has become one of the world's great sanctuaries of mercy. Imam Ali al-Rida, the eighth Imam, was buried in a garden already holding the grave of the caliph who had persecuted his father — an act of political theatre meant to bury the Imam's legacy under imperial power. History reversed the verdict: the golden dome now belongs to the Imam, while the caliph's grave lies unmarked beneath it. His title, Gharib al-Ghuraba, Stranger of Strangers, names both his exile and a deeper spiritual estrangement, fulfilling the Prophet's words that Islam began as a stranger and will return as one. The narration of Dhamin al-Ahu, in which the Imam guaranteed a captured deer so it could nurse its young, is a theology: his wilayah is a guarantee for every vulnerable being who seeks refuge in it. From Mashhad the journey moves to Qom, founded on the loyalty of Sayyedah Fatimah al-Ma'soumeh, whose brother declared that whoever visits her "is like one who has visited me." Her shafa'ah, intercession, is not an escape from duty but a means of finding the strength to fulfil it, and the tradition foretold that knowledge itself would withdraw from Kufa and rise in Qom.
