# The Rope Around His Neck

*Session 5 of [Patience](https://www.truthpromoters.com/events/patience) — 30 October 2024*

Two commanders started the same march, on the same day, for the same regime — and ended up on opposite sides of history.

This session studies patience against sin through one deliberate comparison: two officers in the same force sent against Imam Husayn, peace be upon him, both aware that their orders amounted to a major sin, both pulled by the same hunger for power. One could not resist — the session describes the pull as a rope of ambition, tightening around his neck and dragging him toward ruin, though he had every capability to resist it. The other, Hurr ibn Yazid al-Riyahi, felt the same rope tighten to the very edge of the abyss, and at the last possible moment tore it loose, crossed to the Imam's camp, and was martyred fighting the cause he had been sent to crush.

The session sets this against a narration describing a coming era when power is gained only through violence and love only by abandoning faith, where the believer's task is simply to hold on to poverty, patience and honour rather than trade them for comfort — read here as a pattern still visible now.

What the evening covers

Two men, one road. A comparison of two commanders in the same army, and the single decision that separated them.
The rope image. How the pull of power is described as a rope dragging a person toward ruin — and how one man tore it loose.
A narration about a coming age. The prediction that power, wealth and popularity would only be reachable through corruption — and what patience means inside it.
Karbala's ultimatum. "Between salvation and humiliation," and the refusal to accept the second.

> وَالَّذِينَ لَا تَدْخُلُهُمْ سَأْمَةٌ مِنْ دُءُوبٍ، وَلَا إِعْيَاءٌ مِنْ لُغُوبٍ وَلَا فُتُورٌ، وَلَا تَشْغَلُهُمْ عَنْ تَسْبِيحِكَ الشَّهَوَاتُ، وَلَا يَقْطَعُهُمْ عَنْ تَعْظِيمِكَ سَهْوُ الْغَفَلَاتِ

> those who become not wearied by perseverance, or exhausted and flagged by toil, whom passions distract not from glorifying You, and whose magnification of You is never cut off by the inattention of heedless moments;
