The session builds this claim from the ground up. Physical poison — the nuclear, chemical and biological weapons examined over the previous two evenings — is forbidden because it shares three qualities: it cannot distinguish combatant from civilian, it cannot be controlled once released, and its harm persists long after the act itself. Information warfare, the argument runs, shares the identical three qualities. A fabricated story reaches the guilty and the innocent alike; a rumour, once released, spreads according to its own logic rather than its author's intentions; and a belief formed by a lie is never fully undone by a correction, even when the correction is believed. The Prophet's instruction not to cast poison into an enemy's land, on this reading, addresses the mind as directly as it addresses the water supply. But the Qur'an does not simply condemn speech. Surah al-Nisa grants the person who has been wronged an explicit exception to the usual etiquette of gentle speech — he may speak harshly, name the injustice, demand accountability. This is legitimate protest, not forbidden speech. The line falls where a real grievance is deliberately hijacked: where the Qur'an calls the resulting chaos fitna — sedition — and states, starkly, that it is worse than killing. Where exactly does a citizen's legitimate anger stop being his own, and start being someone else's weapon? What the evening covers The soft war.
