The Philosophy of Intidhar: Action, Not Apathy

Having established who is awaited, this session turns to what awaiting actually requires. A dangerous reading of the tradition once circulated: since the saviour is promised to fill an earth already full of oppression, some concluded that spreading oppression would hasten his arrival. Ayatollah Murtadha Mutahhari dismantled this as destructive awaiting, a corruption that excuses believers from resisting injustice altogether. The correction runs through grammar itself. The Imam's title, al-Muntadhar, means "the awaited one" — but a single vowel shift gives al-Muntadhir, "the one who awaits". The Imam, too, is waiting: for the maturity of his own community. The Prophet did not call this waiting a feeling or a state of rest; he called it the best deed of his community — something you do, like prayer, not something you merely hold in your heart. The sharpest evidence cited is a letter attributed to the Imam addressed to Shaykh al-Mufid, in which he states plainly that if his followers were united in fulfilling their covenant, the blessing of meeting would not have been delayed. The Imam does not blame the ruling powers. He names the disunity of his own community. If waiting is a deed and not a feeling, what exactly are you supposed to be doing?
