The Outcomes of Prophethood

Prophethood, Part 8 Noah preached for nine hundred and fifty years and, by his own effort, moved the world forward by a single step. The picture at the centre of this session is a relay: a load too heavy for one person, or one generation, to carry, moved a metre at a time by one prophet after another, each of them dying before the journey is finished. Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad — each took up the burden where the last one left it. None of them completed the journey themselves. All of them, on that basis, succeeded, because the measure was never whether a single prophet finished the work, only whether he carried it forward. Some prophets did more than carry the load — they lived to see it become a society. The Israelites built a virtuous community after Moses died; Abraham built one within his own lifetime; Solomon ruled an empire governed by God's law. Others, such as Zechariah and John the Baptist, were killed without ever seeing that outcome. The session sets out to explain the difference and lands on one formula, tested against the risings of the Prophet's own descendants, whose supporters promised loyalty and then, when the fighting started, found reasons to stay home. Imam Ali's own account of this, in Sermon 56 of Nahj al-Balagha, is the sharpest version. If truth cannot ultimately be defeated, why do so many righteous causes visibly fail?
