In the year 448 after the Hijra, a new power took Baghdad without a fight. Within a year the house of Shaykh al-Tusi in the Karkh quarter had been sacked, his notebooks burned, and the chair he had taught from for forty years carried out into the road and set alight in front of a crowd. What is astonishing is not the violence. It is the inventory. A Sunni chronicler of Baghdad — a Hanbali, writing a century later, with no reason at all to be kind to us — records what they came for: a line in the call to prayer, a sentence carved over the doors of people's houses, three pieces of white cloth on poles that ordinary pilgrims carried on the road to Kufa, and a chair. Not one dirham of value in any of it. They were not robbing a house. They were subtracting a community — its voice, its confession, its direction, its transmission. And they were exactly right about the list. The question underneath it What actually protects a people when the state turns on them? The answer this session gives, and then spends an hour proving, is: not a building. What the evening covers How a city changes hands. A family off the steppe, one morning in the desert that rearranged the East, and the plain fact that the new power was sent for. The orders were issued by the caliph's own government, in Arabic, on Abbasid paper. A correction we owe our own dead. The version of this night that most of our community carries in its head is not the version the sources support — and this session says so, in detail, before anyone else has to. Verify the report before you decide who hated you. The purge before ours. The first religious persecution this new state carried out fell on Sunni scholars, in another city, two years before it reached us. That fact belongs in this room. A word that is wrong in the book. One word in the chronicle's key sentence is corrupt — not mistranslated, wrong in the printed edition and in the manuscripts behind it, and wrong for a thousand years. We show how it broke, and why the fix is certain. The machine does not care whose hands are on it. The same administrative apparatus that was used against one community in 449 was used against the other in 450. Not Shi'a against Sunni. Truth against the abuse of truth. A note on the two halves This session and the next are one argument split across two evenings. Tonight is what was taken. Next week is what could not be — and it turns out to be a piece of paper. ## Scripture > لَمْ يَكُنِ امْرُؤٌ مِنْهَا فِي حَبْرَةٍ إِلاَّ أَعْقَبَتْهُ بَعْدَهَا عَبْرَةً وَلَمْ يَلْقَ منْ سَرَّائِهَا بَطْناًئف إِلاَّ مَنَحَتْهُ مِنْ ضَرَّائِهَا ظَهْراً وَلَمْ تَطُلَّهُ فِيهَا دِيمَةُ رَخَاءٍ إِلاَّ هَتَنَتْ عَلَيهِ مُزْنَةُ بَلاَءٍ! وَحَرِيٌّ إِذَا أَصْبَحَتْ لَهُ مُنْتَصِرَةً أَنْ تُمْسِيَ لَهُ مُتَنَكِّرَةً، وَإِنْ جَانِبٌ مِنْهَا اعْذَوْذَبَ وَاحْلَوْلَى، أَمَرَّ مِنْهَا جَانِبٌ فَأَوْبَى. لاَ يَنَالُ امْرُؤٌ مِنْ غَضَارَتِهَارَغَباً إِلاَّ أَرْهَقَتْهُ مِنْ نَوَائِبِهَا تَعَباً! وَلاَ يُمْسِي مِنْهَا فِي جَنَاحِ أَمْنٍ، إِلاَّ أَصْبَحَ عَلَى قَوَادِمِ خَوْفٍ! > > No person gets rejoicing from this world but tears come to him after it, and no one gets its comforts in the front but he has to face hardships in the rear. No one receives the light rain of ease in it but the heavy rain of distress pours upon him. It is just worthy of this world that in the morning it supports a man but in the evening it does not recognize him. If one side of it is sweet and pleasant the other side is bitter and distressing. No one secures enjoyment from its freshness but he has to face hardship from its calamities.
