The Lady of Light and the Mother of the Imams, Sayyedah Fatimah al-Zahra

Imamah, Part 5 She was six or seven years old when she took on the task of comforting a father who had just lost his wife and his protector. That father was the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, grieving Sayyedah Khadijah and his uncle Abu Talib during three years of exile and hunger in the Valley of Abu Talib. It was there, still a child, that Sayyedah Fatimah, peace be upon her, earned a title that was never given lightly: Umm Abiha, "the mother of her father". The sources disagree on how long she lived after him — eighteen years, twenty, twenty-five at most — but not on what she did with the time. After the Prophet's death, she stood in the Mosque of Madinah and delivered an address in defence of the succession that scholars have ranked beside the sermons of Nahj al-Balagha for its eloquence. Her son, the second Imam, later recalled watching her pray through the night until dawn, naming believer after believer in her supplications and asking nothing for herself. The session resists reducing her to any single register — devoted wife, grieving mother, political voice, worshipper whose prayer mat carried the marks of her nights. It argues these were never separate roles for her, but one integrated life. What does it mean to call a woman the axis through which guidance continues? What the evening covers Umm Abiha.
