A caravan set out from Madinah to reach an exiled Imam, and never arrived — yet out of what happened on that road, a city was born.

Sayyedah Fatimah al-Ma'soumeh, peace be upon her, was daughter of the seventh Imam, Musa al-Kadhim, and sister of the eighth, Ali al-Rida. When the caliph forced Imam al-Rida from Madinah to distant Khurasan in 200 AH, she answered the next year with a hijrah of her own — a deliberate migration in loyalty — leading a caravan out of Madinah to stand with the Imam of her time.

She never reached him. Near the town of Saveh the caravan was ambushed; several relatives were killed, and she herself was poisoned. Weakened and grieving, she asked not to be carried home but to be taken to Qom, a city loyal to her family. There, that same year, her journey ended.

Her burial did not close her story; it opened one. A shrine grew around her grave, and a humble town grew into one of the great centres of Shia scholarship.
