# The Hearth, The Hub, and The Horizon

During the pandemic, some mosques turned away their own elderly and infirm from the House of God — and our tradition calls that one of the gravest acts a believer can commit.

This closing session on sacred place brings the whole movement home, from the great shrines to the building down the road. The mosque, it argues, belongs to God alone, never to a family, a donor or an ethnicity: "the mosques are for God, so do not invoke with God anyone." Which is why the warning is so severe: "who is more unjust than one who prevents God's name being mentioned in His mosques and strives toward their ruin?" Commentators explain that "ruin" here means the silencing of remembrance inside, not demolition. The session also unpacks a point of jurisprudence many diaspora communities never learn: the difference between a formally endowed masjid, bound forever by its founding waqf formula, and a musalla, a prayer hall, which keeps the flexibility a growing community may need.

From the mosque the evening widens to the Islamic centre, the modern sahn, built on the Prophet's image, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, of the believers as a single body, where one aching limb keeps the whole body awake. It closes wider still: the home as the first sanctuary, and the entire earth as a potential place of prostration.

What the evening covers

A house that belongs to no one but God. Why ownership claims over a mosque betray its purpose.
The exclusion that must never happen again. The Qur'anic severity of barring a believer from the House of God.
Masjid or musalla. The endowment formula that makes a building a mosque forever, and why some communities wait.
A single body. Why a centre with no room for children or elders has no room for its own future.
The home and the horizon. Sanctifying the space nearest to us, and the whole earth as a place of prostration.
