For seventy years, even with the Imam hidden, the Shia had an address: a deputy to write to, a seal to trust, a letter that came back with an answer. In 329 AH that stopped. Writing in 342 AH, the scholar al-Nu'mani recorded the fallout plainly — fragmentation, division, believers who doubted the very Imamate their fathers had handed them, some who left the fold altogether under the weight of what the sources call hayrah: perplexity, the disorientation of a community suddenly asked to believe without the confirmation it had always relied on. The tradition does not treat this doubt as simple failure. A distinction runs through the sources between the doubt that drives a person to investigate — moving from believing because one's father believed, to believing because one has examined the proofs oneself — and the doubt used as an excuse to stop seeking. The first produces scholars. The second produces apostates. Set against both extremes stands what the Qur'an calls a middle nation: neither the impatient who forced events ahead of their time, nor those who gave up and fell behind. And praise be to Allah, who created light from light, and sent down the light upon Mount Tur (Sinai), in a written Book, upon unfolded scrolls, in due measure, upon an adorned Prophet. Praise be to Allah, who is remembered with glory, and is renowned for His greatness, and is praised in times of joy and hardship.
