Opening a new arc on the mechanics of ghaybah — occultation — this session asks why the withdrawal of the Imam happened in two stages rather than one. The answer begins with politics: after the killing of Imam Husayn at Karbala, each generation of Imams operated under tighter security than the last — Imam Sajjad's an occultation of supplication, Imam Baqir and Imam al-Sadiq's an occultation conducted through scholarship, and Imam al-Hadi and Imam al-Askari's an occultation enforced by literal imprisonment in a garrison. The second reason is social. For roughly two hundred and fifty years the community had grown accustomed to knocking on the Imam's own door with every question. The sixty-nine-year Minor Occultation weaned them off that dependency, redirecting them first to deputies, then to jurists — the direct root of the authority scholars hold today. The third reason is the deepest: a tradition holds that the earth cannot survive even an hour without a living Proof upon it, hidden or not — a claim the Imam himself is said to have illustrated with an image of his own: benefiting from him in occultation is like benefiting from the sun behind clouds. If two centuries of direct access built the community, why take it away? What the evening covers Two hundred years in the making. How each Imam after Karbala operated under tightening levels of concealment. Authority without a signature. How an Imam too closely watched to issue a public command still guided events. The weaning. Why the sixty-nine-year Minor Occultation redirected the community from person to principle. The sun behind the clouds. The Imam's own image for what it means to benefit from a guide you cannot see. ## Scripture > بِهَا تَجَلَّى صَانِعُهَا لِلْعُقُولِ، وَبِهَا امْتَنَعَ عَنْ نَظَرِ الْعُيُونِ. لاَ يَجْرِي عَلَيْهِ السُّكُونُ وَالْحَرَكَةُ، وَكَيْفَ يَجْرِي عَلَيْهِ مَا هُوَ أَجْرَاهُ، وَيَعُودُ فِيهِ مَا هُوَ أَبْدَاهُ، وَيَحْدُثُ فِيهِ مَا هُوَ أَحْدَثَةُ ؟! إِذاً لَتَفَاوَتَتْ ذَاتُهُ، وَلَتَجَزَّأَ كُنْهُهُ، وَلاَمْتَنَعَ مِنَ الاْزَلِ مَعْنَاهُ، وَلَكَانَ لَهُ وَرَاءٌ إِذْ وُجِدَ لَهُ أَمَامٌ، وَلاَلْـتَمَسَ الـتَّمامَ إِذْ لَزِمَهُ النُّقْصَانُ. وَإِذاً لَقَامَتْ آيَةُ الْمَصْنُوعِ فِيهِ، وَلَتَحَوَّلَ دَلِيلاً بَعْدَ أَنْ كَانَ مَدْلُولاً عَلَيْهِ، وَخَرَجَ بِسُلْطَانِ الاْمْتِنَاعِ مِنْ أَنْ يُؤَثِّرَ فِيهِ مَا يُؤثِّرُ فِي غَيْرِهِ. > > Through them the Creator manifests Himself to the intelligence, and through them He is guarded from the sight of the eyes. Stillness and motion do not occur in Him, and how can that thing occur in Him which He has Himself made to occur, and how can a thing revert to Him which He first created, and how can a thing appear in Him which He first brought to appearance. If it had not been so, His Self would have become subject to diversity, His Being would have become divisible (into parts), and His reality would have been prevented from being deemed Eternal. If there was a front to Him there would have been a rear also for Him. He would need completing only if shortage befell Him. In that case signs of the created would appear in Him, and He would become a sign (leading to other objects) instead of signs leading to Him.
