The Charter of Wilayah and The Light in the Garrison

Imamah, Part 21 · Imam al-Hadi, Part 1 of 2 Under constant surveillance in a military camp, the Imam wrote the single most complete definition of what an Imam even is. Imam Ali al-Hadi, peace be upon him, was born in Madinah in 212 AH and became Imam at eight — the same test the community had faced with his father a generation before. For thirteen quiet years he taught there, until the ruling power, unsettled by his following, sent a letter dressed as an invitation but backed by a military escort. In 233 AH he was moved to Samarra, the caliphate's purpose-built garrison capital, lodged first in a rundown inn for the poor, then settled in its military quarter — origin of the epithet al-Askari that both he and his son would carry. He lived there under watch for twenty years. From inside that confinement he delivered Ziyarah al-Jami'ah al-Kabirah — a comprehensive visitation prayer, recitable at the shrine of any Imam, carried down through two of the four foundational books of Shia hadith. Later scholars have called it a constitution of the Imamate: "the Truth is with you, in you, from you, and to you." He was also summoned to a court of wine, refused the cup, and answered with a poem on death that left the gathering in tears. Can a constitution be written from a cage?
