Before this series can walk through the 250-year life of the Imams, it pauses on the man whose life makes theirs comprehensible. The session traces the mission of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, from before revelation — giving away his trading income to the poor, ascending Mount Hira in contemplation — to age forty, when the angel Gabriel descended with the command "Read, in the name of your Lord who created". What follows: thirteen years of persecution in Makkah and nearly ten years of governance in Madinah — an army organised, letters sent to the rulers of Persia and Rome, a mosque built on land bought from two orphans. The session treats spiritual formation and political survival as inseparable, walking through three battles: Badr; Uhud, where fifty archers broke ranks; and Khandaq, saved by a trench dug on the advice of his companion Salman al-Farisi — a tactic unknown in Arabia before then. If the Prophet's household, his mosque, his wars and his choice of successor were all one project, on what grounds can any of it be separated from politics? What the evening covers The camel that chose the house. How the Prophet's arrival in Madinah rejected tribal favouritism from its first hour. Age forty, Mount Hira. The conditions preceding revelation, and how his character was tested before the mission began. Three battles, three lessons. Badr, Uhud and Khandaq, read as tests of discipline and strategic wisdom. Bilal's call to prayer. How choosing a formerly enslaved man as the first muezzin redefined honour. Ghadir Khumm.
