# Nothing But Beauty

*Session 1 of [Patience](https://www.truthpromoters.com/events/patience) — 1 October 2024*

The most common definition of patience is a tool built for the people crushing you, not for you.

Tell an oppressed person to "be patient" in its everyday sense — tolerate the unpleasant — and you have handed their oppressor a weapon. This opening session takes that definition apart. Set against the Qur'an's seventy-plus verses on the subject and the teachings of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, real patience means something closer to the opposite: resistance on the road toward perfection.

The session develops this through a mountaineer facing two obstacles: internal ones like fear and comfort-seeking, external ones like storms and loose rock. Patience is neither ignoring the mountain nor being crushed by it, but the decision to keep climbing. From here it turns to worship: not the hollow, ritualistic kind that pacifies a person, but worship that empowers and unsettles tyrants, rooted in the Qur'an's statement that humanity was created to worship God.

It closes with Imam Sajjad, peace be upon him, who watched Karbala unfold as a young man, and whose whispered prayer of the complainer, from the Sahifa Sajjadiyyah, became a teaching on resisting inner collapse. And with the words of his aunt, Sayyedah Zaynab, over the wreckage of her brother's camp: "I saw nothing but beauty."

If patience is not submission, what is it actually demanding of you?

What the evening covers

Two definitions, one word. Why "tolerate the unpleasant" becomes a weapon for oppressors, and what the Qur'an means by patience instead.
The mountaineer. Internal obstacles like fear, external ones like rock and weather, and why resisting both is patience.
Worship that unsettles tyrants. Ritual that pacifies, versus worship that strengthens resolve.
"I saw nothing but beauty." Imam Sajjad's whispered prayer, and Sayyedah Zaynab's words after Ashura.

>
> Except for those who have believed and done righteous deeds and advised each other to truth and advised each other to patience

— *Quran, Surah Al-'Asr (The Declining Day), Chapter 103, Verse 3*
