It turns out the Imamate cannot. The scheme to make Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him, heir-apparent rested on one mistaken assumption: that the Imamate was a title a ruler could confer, the way he might appoint a governor. The Qur'an says otherwise. When Abraham was tested and elevated, God told him plainly, "I am making you an Imam for the people" — even a prophet could not appoint himself to the role. Imam al-Sadiq had already made the point explicit: "Imamate is a covenant from God, bound to a prophet. Whoever denies the Imamate denies prophethood." This session draws what the previous three had shown in action into a working doctrine. The conditions Imam al-Rida set on his succession — no appointments, no rulings, no share in war or policy — became a legal template for how far cooperation with unjust power may go, bounded strictly by necessity. The hardest lesson came from inside his own community: some followers, unable to see the strategy behind his acceptance, accused him of compromise. Legitimacy, he insisted, was never a caliph's to give, nor a follower's to withhold. If legitimacy does not come from a throne, where does it come from — and how do you tell the difference? What the evening covers Divine designation. Why the Qur'an's account of Abraham shows that not even a prophet can appoint himself Imam. The conditions, restated. How the powers the Imam refused to exercise hardened into a lasting legal principle. Necessity has a limit. The narrow, bounded rule for when cooperation with unjust power is permitted at all. The trial from within.
