For ten years under the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, and then under Imam Ali, the Islamic state had governed with its own army, judiciary and economy. Imam Hasan, peace be upon him, inherited that whole structure. What he did with it looks, on the surface, like defeat: a treaty that handed the caliphate to a rival dynasty. The session argues the opposite — that walking away from a captured throne was the only way to keep the throne's original purpose alive. The unity behind that decision is easy to miss. When companions objected to the treaty, it was Imam Husayn who stood up and gestured them into silence. The brothers were not divided; one carried the treaty, the other would carry its consequences to Karbala two decades later. What followed the treaty is its own evidence. Within a generation, loyalty to the new order was being bought outright, traditions were being fabricated and attributed to the Prophet, and the public cursing of Imam Ali from the pulpit became state policy for forty years before it was ever repealed. One companion, the session recounts, was reportedly offered five hundred thousand dirhams, stacked before him, to falsely attach two verses of the Qur'an to Imam Ali and to his assassin.
