That student rode a reed stick through the streets like a child's toy, wore a necklace of lamb's ankle bones, and sang nonsense verses until the governor of Kufa reported back that he was no threat, only a madman. It worked. This was the world Imam Baqir, peace be upon him, the fifth Imam, was operating in: a lull after two shattering massacres, Karbala and Harrah, that had frightened the community into silence but had also, briefly, loosened the state's grip. Into that opening, the Imam built two things at once. The first was a standard for sifting truth from fabrication that still carries weight: any reported saying that does not agree with the Qur'an, he taught, is to be discarded as falsehood, whoever it is attributed to. The second was a network of trusted transmitters reaching from the Hijaz to Iraq to Khurasan, built one tested companion at a time. When the ruling court in Damascus summoned him and his young son, the future sixth Imam, hoping to humiliate him before their gathering, he refused to grant the ruler a title that belonged only to the rightful heir of the Prophet — and was expelled rather than broken.
