From Containment to Amplification

Imamah, Part 14 · Imam al-Rida, Part 2 of 4 The caliph plotted a route around every city where the Imam had support. The Imam filled the empty ones instead. The journey from Madinah to Marv was meant to isolate Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him, from the community that revered him — the caravan routed around strongholds where his arrival might spark unrest. It backfired at every stop; each city became a pulpit, most of all at Nishapur, where the caravan was halted by the crowd and scholars of hadith stood ready with their pens. There, Imam al-Rida narrated what became known as the Golden Chain — a narration carried father to son through six Imams to the Prophet, to Gabriel, to God: "La ilaha illa Allah is My fortress; whoever enters My fortress is safe from My punishment." As the caravan pulled away, he called back a condition: "with its conditions — and I am one of its conditions", binding monotheism to loyalty to the Imam of the age. Twenty thousand pens are said to have recorded it. Later, a poet recited an elegy naming the scattered graves of the Imam's family; Imam al-Rida added two verses foretelling his own burial at Tus, then gave him his own cloak as a shroud. What does it take to plant a single sentence so firmly that twenty thousand people write it down before the caravan is out of sight? What the evening covers The avoided route.
