For generations, the charge against the Shia has been simple: their religion permits them to lie, so nothing they say can be trusted. The word behind the charge is taqiyyah — strategic prudence — and this evening sets out to reclaim it. The case begins in the Qur'an itself, in Surah Aal-e Imran, where God prohibits believers from taking their enemies as allies and then opens a single, deliberate exception: unless they must shield themselves from real danger. The very word used for that exception shares its root with taqwa, the God-consciousness every believer is told to hold onto. The evidence is not confined to legal theory. Ammar ibn Yasir, one of the earliest converts to Islam and son of the faith's first two martyrs, was tortured until he spoke words of disbelief. He came to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, weeping, certain he had left the fold. Revelation followed, distinguishing the tongue that speaks under duress from the heart that has not moved — and the Prophet told him plainly that if the torture returned, he could speak the words again. A second model appears in Surah al-Ghafir: a believer inside Pharaoh's own household who concealed his faith until the moment concealment would have meant Moses's death, then spoke. If God permits the weak to shield themselves from the strong, why has that permission become a source of shame rather than survival? What the evening covers The exception clause. O Supporter of those who seek backing, O Refuge of those who seek shelter, O Deliverer of those who perish, O Guardian of the destitute, O Compassionate One toward the impoverished, O Answerer of the desperate, O Treasure of the needy, O Restorer of the defeated, O Haven of the displaced, O Helper of the belittled, O Shelter of the frightened, O Consoler of the grief-stricken, O Fortress of those who seek protection! If I do not take refuge in Your might, then in whom shall I take refuge? And if I do not seek shelter in Your power, then in whom shall I seek shelter?
