Building Before the Builder Returns

Opens 15 minutes before the session begins.
Mahdawiyyah, Part 17 · The Architecture of Guidance, Part 1 The last letter the Hidden Imam ever sent closed one door — and opened one that has never shut since. In 329 AH, the fourth and final deputy delivered the last written communication from the Imam of our Age, and died six days later. The door of specific deputyship was closed for good. But the real weight of that moment had already been set down in an earlier letter: refer your affairs to the narrators of our hadith, "for surely they are my proof upon you, and I am the proof of God upon them". Not advice. A constitutional charter, establishing a chain — God to Imam to scholar to community — that has governed Shia religious life ever since. Tonight opens a new arc tracing what that chain built: the hawza, a seminary with no campus, where the scholar is the institution rather than the other way round — which is why the great madrasas of the Islamic world were named for their teachers, not their buildings. It traces why Najaf, resting place of Imam Ali, peace be upon him, and Qom, resting place of Sayyedah Fatimah al-Ma'soumeh, became the tradition's two lungs. And it sets Imam al-Sadiq's own charge to his students — "be an ornament for us, and not a disgrace upon us" — as the standard the whole enterprise was built to meet. When the Imam disappeared — who kept the light on? What the evening covers The tawqi'. The sentence, delivered through the second deputy, that made the scholars the Imam's proof upon the community. The hawza. Why a seminary built around a teacher, not a building, has outlasted the oldest universities in Europe. Sacred geography. Why Najaf and Qom cannot be replicated elsewhere. Three movements ahead. Sixteen sessions on the hawza's builders, then the marja'iyyah, then wilayat al-faqih.

Peace be upon you, O guardians of Allah and His devoted lovers. Peace be upon you, O chosen ones of Allah and those who cherish Him. Peace be upon you, O helpers of the religion of Allah. Peace be upon you, O companions of the Messenger of Allah. Peace be upon you, O companions of the Commander of the Faithful. Peace be upon you, O companions of Fatimah, the mistress of the women of all the worlds. Peace be upon you, O companions of Abu Muhammad, al-Hasan ibn Ali, the benevolent guardian. Peace be upon you, O companions of Abu Abdillah. May my father and mother be sacrificed for you. You have been purified, and purified is the earth in which you are buried, and you have attained a great triumph. Would that I had been with you, so that I too would have attained triumph alongside you.
