That is the claim this session opens with, quoting a tradition attributed to Imam al-Sadiq, peace be upon him: good deeds performed without wilayah — literally guardianship, the binding allegiance owed to God's rightful authority — are wasted. The session sets out to earn that claim from the Qur'an itself, tracing wilayah back to its earliest and most literal sense: a small group of people bound to one another so tightly that nothing can pull them apart, and kept deliberately separate from every rival movement around them, because separation is what lets a minority survive. Two images carry the argument. Mountain climbers roped together on a narrow, snow-covered trail, so that if one slips the others can pull him back rather than watch him fall. And a river with two currents running side by side without mixing — one turbid, one clear — the second never taking on the colour or the bitterness of the water around it. This, the session argues, is what the earliest Muslims in Makkah had to be, and what the Shia had to become under hostile caliphates centuries later: a current that does not mix. The evening closes with a single case. Yahya ibn Umm Tawil, a disciple of the fourth Imam, stood in the Mosque of Madinah and publicly disowned the townspeople who had lived twenty years alongside Imam Hasan and Imam Husayn yet abandoned the family at Karbala out of fear. For refusing to stop, his hands and feet were cut off, one at a time, and finally his tongue. What does it actually take to hold a movement together when everything around it is pulling it apart? They do not exchange the verses of Allah for a small price. Those will have their reward with their Lord.
