Once installed at court, Imam al-Rida, peace be upon him, warned the very people who came to congratulate him: "Do not be deceived, for this matter will not be fulfilled." He was right. The caliph arranged public debates with the era's leading Christian, Jewish and Zoroastrian scholars, hoping to expose the Imam before the empire's intellectual elite. Each debate went the other way — the Imam answering Christians from the Gospels, Jews from the Torah, drawing on reason and history against every opponent. When neither the throne nor the debates could contain him, the same weapon that had already killed his father was used again. In 203 AH, Imam al-Rida was poisoned and died at Tus. His shrine at Mashhad has drawn pilgrims ever since; the palace that arranged his death is remembered mostly for having done so. The episode left behind a legal principle still cited today: political office in Islam is taklif, a burden of responsibility, never tashrif, an honour — and cooperating with unjust power is permitted only under genuine necessity, and only to the extent necessity requires. Is holding power a prize to be won, or a debt that has to be justified to God? What the evening covers The warning. What the Imam told the people who congratulated him on his new title. The debates. The legal principle — taklif, not tashrif — that still governs serving under unjust rule. ## Scripture > ٱعۡلَمُوٓاْ أَنَّمَا ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا لَعِبٞ وَلَهۡوٞ وَزِينَةٞ وَتَفَاخُرُۢ بَيۡنَكُمۡ وَتَكَاثُرٞ فِي ٱلۡأَمۡوَٰلِ وَٱلۡأَوۡلَٰدِۖ كَمَثَلِ غَيۡثٍ أَعۡجَبَ ٱلۡكُفَّارَ نَبَاتُهُۥ ثُمَّ يَهِيجُ فَتَرَىٰهُ مُصۡفَرّٗا ثُمَّ يَكُونُ حُطَٰمٗاۖ وَفِي ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ عَذَابٞ شَدِيدٞ وَمَغۡفِرَةٞ مِّنَ ٱللَّهِ وَرِضۡوَٰنٞۚ وَمَا ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَآ إِلَّا مَتَٰعُ ٱلۡغُرُورِ > > Know that the life of this world is but amusement and diversion and adornment and boasting to one another and competition in increase of wealth and children - like the example of a rain whose [resulting] plant growth pleases the tillers; then it dries and you see it turned yellow; then it becomes [scattered] debris. And in the Hereafter is severe punishment and forgiveness from Allah and approval.
